Palaces Event Tile.jpg

Bestselling author and sociologist Eric Klinenberg argues in his latest study, Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life, that the future of democracy rests not simply on shared values, but also on shared spaces- especially libraries- where essential, and sometimes life-saving, connections are made. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion about the crucial role libraries play in today’s society from one of the nation’s most respected sociologists.

This event is presented by the San Diego Public Library Foundation and is free and open to the public. Following the presentation there will be a Q&A and a book signing. Books will be available for sale through The Library Shop. Proceeds support the San Diego Public Library system.

About Palaces for the People and Eric Klinenberg:

We are living in a time of deep divisions. Americans are sorting themselves along racial, religious, and cultural lines, leading to a level of polarization that the country hasn’t seen since the Civil War. Pundits and politicians are calling for us to come together, to find common purpose. But how, exactly, can this be done? In Palaces for the People, Eric Klinenberg suggests a way forward. He believes that the future of democratic societies rests not simply on shared values but on shared spaces: the libraries, childcare centers, bookstores, churches, synagogues, and parks where crucial, sometimes life-saving connections, are formed. Richly reported, elegantly written, and ultimately uplifting, Palaces for the People urges us to acknowledge the crucial role these spaces play in civic life. Our social infrastructure could be the key to bridging our seemingly unbridgeable divides—and safeguarding democracy.

Eric Klinenberg is Helen Gould Shepard Professor of Social Science and Director of the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University. He is the author of Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life (Crown, 2018), Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone (The Penguin Press, 2012), Fighting for Air: The Battle to Control America’s Media (Metropolitan Books, 2007), and Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago (University of Chicago Press, 2002), as well as the editor of Cultural Production in a Digital Age, co-editor of Antidemocracy in America (Columbia University Press, 2019), and co-author, with Aziz Ansari, of the New York Times #1 bestseller Modern Romance (The Penguin Press, 2015). His scholarly work has been published in journals including the American Sociological Review, Theory and Society, and Ethnography, and he has contributed to The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, and This American Life.

An Evening With Cory Doctorow/Friends 40th Lecture

Cory Doctorow Headshot.jpg

Join the Friends of the San Diego Public Library as they celebrate 40 years of advocacy and support of your library with international best-selling science fiction author, blogger and journalist Cory Doctorow (Little Brother, Radicalized). Doctorow, a lifelong supporter of libraries, digital rights, and the Creative Commons, will discuss- in honor of the Friends and National Library Week's 2019 theme Libraries = Strong Communities- libraries as the last stand of a society where people are valued because of their humanity, not their money, and how that works in the current moment of extreme inequality, epistemological incoherence, and fear of imminent collapse. Following the lecture there will be a book signing. This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.  To ensure a reserved seat simply pre-order a copy of Mr. Doctorow’s Radicalized below. All proceeds support the San Diego Public Library System.

The Friends of the San Diego Public Library have provided financial support for events and programming at all 36 branches of the San Diego Public Library since 1978. To become a member, volunteer, or to find out how you can help visit www.friendsofsdpl.org.

Since 1958 National Library Week (April 7-13) has been a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.  This year's theme is Libraries = Strong Communities

Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist and journalist — the co-editor of Boing Boing (boingboing.net) and the author of many books, most recently WALKAWAY, a novel for adults, IN REAL LIFE, a graphic novel; INFORMATION DOESN’T WANT TO BE FREE, a book about earning a living in the Internet age, and HOMELAND, a YA sequel to LITTLE BROTHER.
